Advice for When You Get Pulled Over by the Police

Here is some advice for what documents to present when you are prompted to do so by a police officer.

Whether or not you drive in the District, it is possible to be pulled over for one reason or another. We are all reasonably familiar with the classic “license and registration” request when getting pulled over. Why is this the case? Where did it come from, exactly? Here is some advice for what documents to present when you are prompted to do so by a police officer.

When You Witness an Accident

It’s not always easy to drive past an accident without rubbernecking to see it. It’s human nature to view something like that as long as we aren’t personally involved. Even so, chances are good that it will happen at some point. You aren’t under any obligation to stay by the scene unless you were involved in the accident, at which point it would be classified as a hit-and-run incident

When Stopped by Police

The real dilemma is when you are pulled over by the police. Provide any documents that they ask you for and make the experience as smooth as possible. Make sure that no matter where your adventures in Maryland, Virginia, and DC take you, have your license, registration, and insurance information handy. You never know when you will need it, and this is one of those situations where it’s better to have something and not need it than the other way around.

Onboard Registration and Insurance

Now let’s turn our attention to keeping your vehicle registration and insurance information in your glovebox. It’s just good practice, especially if you need to update your license or REAL ID information at the DMV or the MVA; it will make your life much easier and prevent any confusion from slowing down whatever you need to do – or you could have USVRS handle it for you instead!
