Changing Your Name on Your Driver’s License, Part 2

When most people think of changing their names, they think of the different ways they can go about changing it on their license.

When you have a big life event change, you may need to legally change your name. Marriage and divorce are the primary reasons people choose to change their names, though there are many others. When most people think of changing their names, they think of the different ways they can go about changing it on their license. Before you can even head to the DMV or MVA, however, you have to head to the Social Security Administration.

Why You Need To Head To SSA First

When it becomes time to change your name legally, you have to change it on a variety of documents. The first of these changes needs to be with the Social Security Administration (or SSA) since you need a correct Social Security card to verify your name change. When you go to the SSA, you will need to show them your original driver’s license (with your old name) to prove that you are who you say you are.

What You Need To Know Before You Go

Changing your name at the SSA requires you to take documentation with you and provide it to them. This includes your old license or RealID to prove that you are you. You will also need a document that links your old name to your new name or justifies the name change, like a marriage license or decree of divorce. Finally, you will also have to fill out the name change form and submit it with the rest of the documentation.

Alternatives To Going In Person

Going into the SSA in person can take up a huge chunk of your time, but it is the most effective way to do it. You cannot request a name change from the SSA online. You can do it through the mail, but you have to wait a long time. You have to wait for your documents to be received, to be verified, and then your new card to be sent to you. If you go in person, you can have your new Social Security card the same day. This new card will have your original Social Security number but your new name, and you can take it with you to the DMV when you get your license
