DC Out-of-Town Inspection Sticker Renewal
Are you a DC resident but you will be out of town when your DC inspection sticker expires? If you are located at least 75 miles outside of the District and can’t return before your sticker will be expired, DC will allow you to have your vehicle inspected from your current location.
Out-of-Town Inspection
All out-of-town inspections need to be performed by a certified repair center or dealer. United States Vehicle Registration Service can help you find an appropriate center if you are not sure where to start. If you are in Maryland or Virginia, we will request an emissions test. If you are in another state that United States Vehicle Registration Service does not work in, you may need to request an on-board diagnostic test instead.
In order to be acceptable to the DC DMV, they will need the test results printed by the service center on official letterhead. All test results need to include:
- Vehicle year
- Vehicle model
- Vehicle make
- Current mileage
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Tag number
What Next?
Once we receive the emissions testing results on your behalf, we will present the documents to a resolution councilor at the DC Department of Motor Vehicles. They will then review the inspection results to ensure that the levels are within DC requirements. If they are accepted, you will have an approved and valid inspection for two years. When you renew your registration in the future, you will be charged a DC inspection fee. Your renewal sticker will be mailed to your out-of-state address so that your inspection will not lapse.

- Two copies of DC Driver’s License
- Vehicle registration card
- Current vehicle insurance card
- Emissions test results on official letterhead from out-of-state inspection station (see above)
