A Guide to Getting Title Work Done in DC

There are three common reasons to need to have title work done in Washington, DC: you need to replace a title that was lost or stolen, you need to update a title, or you need a new title when you buy a new vehicle.

The title to a car is a very important document; it is the legal proof that you own the vehicle. It is something that you need to always have in the vehicle and it is important to make sure that it is always current and correct. There are three common reasons to need to have title work done in Washington, DC: you need to replace a title that was lost or stolen, you need to update a title, or you need a new title when you buy a new vehicle.

Getting A New Title

When you buy a car, you will receive the original title from the previous owner, or a certificate of origin from the dealership. You must have one of these to receive a new title from the DMV. If you are transferring a vehicle from a different jurisdiction, you should bring your title with you, or have your lien holders send it to the DMV. You will also need your ID, proof of residency,  the bill of sale, proof of odometer reading, and your lien or lease contract, if applicable. You will also have to pay a fee to receive your new title. Once you present all the required info to the DMV, your title will be mailed to the primary owner (of the lien holder) within 10 business days.

Replacing A Title

If you need a replacement title because yours was lost, stolen, or damaged, but you don’t need to make any changes to the information, you can apply for it online by filling out a certificate of title/ temporary tag application. You will still need to pay a fee for the duplicate title, but you don’t need to go in in person. You can also mail the forms and fee to the DC DMV. In addition to the form, you will also have to provide your identification, a description of the vehicle, and a VIN number.

Correcting A Title

Occasionally, you may have to apply for a correct title. This is most often because you have paid of your car. You need to bring proof that you have satisfied the lien: a letter from your lien holder on company letterhead, of the original contract or title, stamped “Paid”.
