Do you ever spare a thought for your car title? Believe it or not, it is a supremely valuable document. Losing it could cause more headaches than you need when it’s time to revisit the Department of Motor Vehicles in our nation’s capital. Here is a look at why car titles are so crucial in Washington DC. All present and future residents of the District should take note.
Current Titles and Certificates
Getting a title is not as frustrating a process as you might you believe. Submitting the right documents to the DC DMV will move the process right along without any further ado or delay. However, you must have the original documents, as copies are unacceptable. With that in mind, you must submit the current title or certificate of origin for your car.
Please note that any altered claims are also currently unacceptable. If the titles have been changed at any time while in your possession, then you are required to apply for a replacement title. That said, if you are transferring a vehicle from outside of the District and it has a lien on it, then this is a matter where you must contact the lienholder as soon as you can.
Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards
Driver’s licenses and identification cards are important papers that you need to keep on your person at all times while you are out and about; that way you can be identified if anything should happen to you or your vehicle while on the road.
Please note that all owners must be named on the title. Present several other documents when you wish to receive new titles for your car. The primary owner must live in the District and hold the proper credentials as well; this includes photo identification for the next time the car or truck needs a registration update. What are the supporting documents that you must furnish? They include the bill of sale, valid odometer statement, the lien contract, and the lease contract. However, the last two items are only needed if they apply to the situation.
