What DC Drivers Need to Know About Disability Placards

Long term placards last for eight years and coincide with the lifespan of other credentials issued by the state including drivers licenses and ID cards.

If you live in the District of Columbia and require disability parking, there are many things you need to know. Today, we’ll walk you through some of the background and basics of disability plates in DC. Disability permits are required for the use of handicap parking as well as several other benefits, and a DMV issued placard must be visible while using these facilities. Only residents who meet specific criteria can obtain a placard.

Who Is Eligible

There are a variety of different types of placards you can apply for, with some being permanent and others only for short term use. Depending on your condition and the expected duration, you can choose from placards that are valid for a week or more. Long term placards last for eight years and coincide with the lifespan of other credentials issued by the state including drivers licenses and ID cards. To obtain a handicap placard of any length, you will need to have documentation from a licensed medical professional.

How To Apply

To obtain your placard, you can apply in a few ways, including; by mail, fax, online, and in person. While each application type, you will be required to fill out an application and submit it with proper documentation. For short term placards, a different form will be used, and often a physicians verification is not necessary. In general, you will only need to have a copy of your license, your physician’s certification. If you intend to apply in person, and your disability does not allow for it, you can have someone go in your place to obtain the placard.

Renewal

Long term and temporary disability parking permits can be renewed within 60 days of their expiration date with relative ease. Restoration can be done in all of the same fashions as the initial application. There will be a relevant form based on the type of placard you have and is often more straightforward than the initial application.
