A Guide to Titling Used Vehicles in Maryland

Even though dealing with the MVA can be frustrating, one of the many services USVRS can provide for you is how to navigate the titling process.

At some point your driving career, you will need a new vehicle. Getting the paperwork arranged doesn’t need to be complicated. Even though dealing with the MVA can be frustrating, one of the many services USVRS can provide for you is how to navigate the titling process. What do you need to know about it when you want to get a title for a used vehicle? Let’s find out together!

Proof of Ownership

The first document you must furnish when titling a used vehicle is your proof of ownership. You need to hold the current title, and it needs to be registered to you in the proper way. A bill of sale may be used as a substitute if you bought the vehicle in a different state, such as Virginia. You will also need a registration document.

Application Forms

You cannot overlook the importance of application forms when attempting to complete the titling of a used car or truck. If the current title was issued in Maryland, then you can use it as part of your application form. Complete the section titled “Application for Title and Registration.”

Proof of Purchase

If you have proof of ownership, then you might be wondering why you need to provide proof of purchase as well. This bill of sale needs to be signed by both parties: the seller and the buyer. It must also be notarized under the following conditions:

  1. The vehicle is newer than 7 years old
  2. The purchase price was at least $500 below the current book value
  3. The buyer (aka the new owner) wants to calculate the excise tax based on the sale price and not the book price; the normal calculation is 6% of the vehicle’s value.

Odometer Disclosure

Finally, you will have to read the odometer of the vehicle, no matter what it is. The reading can be recorded and attested in the Assignment of Ownership section on the Maryland title. There is also a statement form that you can submit instead if it makes your life even easier. That is, after all, our goal here!
